Why B Vitamins Won’t Help Your Nerve Pain…

Dr. Kennedy, DO, Ph.D., MBA, FAAFP

They’re touted as an effective way to support nerve health and even reduce pins & needles discomfort or weakness, but do they work? Here’s what one seasoned expert says you need to know BEFORE taking B vitamins for nerve pain.

Talk to any expert on nerve discomfort or do some basic research on the condition and you’ll quickly learn that vitamin B12 is perhaps the most important vitamin for boosting your nerve health.

So why would I tell you that it won’t help with your nerve discomfort?

It’s not that B12 CAN’T help boost nerve health and ease nerve discomfort.

If you find it in the right form, it absolutely can and will help.

The problem is that most of the B12 vitamins you’ll find at your grocery store or online aren’t the right form of B12 and won’t do anything but produce expensive urine.

In the right form, B12 plays a crucial role in supporting nerve health in the following ways…

Myelin Production: Every nerve in your body is protected by a microscopic layer of fat called the Myelin Sheath. It protects the nerve signals as they travel to and from the brain. But if the myelin sheath is damaged and the nerves touch each other – it can cause a short circuit. Vitamin B-12 is one of the few vitamins that helps produce myelin in the body to protect nerves.

Nerve Regeneration: Vitamin B12 is involved in the synthesis of DNA, which is essential for the growth and repair of cells, including nerve cells. Adequate levels of vitamin B12 support nerve regeneration and may help repair damaged nerves.

Homocysteine Regulation: Vitamin B12, along with other B vitamins, plays a role in the metabolism of homocysteine, an amino acid. Elevated levels of homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of nerve damage and pain. Vitamin B12 helps lower homocysteine levels, reducing the risk of nerve damage.

If Vitamin B12 is so effective at reducing nerve pain, why do I say it won't help?

Well, there’s a dirty little secret that most vitamin manufacturers don’t want you to know.

Most manufacturers are trying to boost their bottom line by selling a cheaper, less effective form of the vitamins they’re pushing.

This is especially true of vitamin B12.

Vitamin manufacturers know all too well that most consumers only pay attention to the names on the labels that they’re familiar with (i.e. Vitamin B12).

For example, if you pick up a vitamin B12 supplement from your grocery store or pharmacy – you’re probably just looking for the words “vitamin B12” on the label.

Once you see B12, you toss it into your cart and move on.

But, there are 5 different types of Vitamin B12 and taking the right one is crucial to supporting your nerves. I’ll tell you which form of B12 to look for in the next section (hint: MOST vitamin B12 supplements don’t use this form).
